![]() ![]() It’s important for individuals, especially tourists to our country and who may be unaware of the dangers, to follow alerts and advise from Costa Rican authorities. It’s also one of the most visited areas in the country and loved by local and international tourists. With over 34,000 acres, Rincon de la Vieja National Park is home to two volcanoes, 32 rivers and streams, and an incredible variety of flora and fauna. Located in the Guanacaste province, this National Park houses one of Costa Rica’s active volcanoes. ![]() Their ongoing observations are invaluable, offering insights into the volcano’s behavior and preparing residents and visitors for potential future eruptions. The National Seismological Network (RSN) and the Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica ( OVSICORI) continue to meticulously monitor the volcano’s behavior and provide valuable insights into its dynamic activities. ![]() Moreover, the Rincón de la Vieja volcano witnessed multiple eruptions in both 20, spewing ash and gas columns. These volcanic activities are generally characterized by small to moderate phreatic eruptions, known for releasing steam, water, and ash. The Observatorio Vulcanológico y Sismológico de Costa Rica (OVSICORI) issued that three small phreatic eruptions and 23 steam-laden plumes appeared from the volcano over the past week. These latest eruptions are not unprecedented, as experts have documented similar events in recent years. These occurrences, while not seismic-intensive, are distinctive. Ongoing reports indicate that the volcano frequently experiences eruptions of relatively low energy, which nonetheless yield substantial gas plumes. Clear visibility allowed for observation under the moonlight,” detailed OVSICORI through its official Facebook account. The plumes, mostly composed of water vapor due to calm wind conditions, rose vertically and displayed a white hue. “The seismic signals associated with these eruptions are minimal, suggesting a similarity to exhalations. Importantly, these eruptions did not result in lahar formations, which are mixtures of volcanic sediments and water. The Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica (OVSICORI) reported that both eruptions produced a gas plume that reached an altitude of 3,000 meters above the volcano. All subsequent eruptions, including numerous historical eruptions possibly dating back to the 16th century, have been from the prominent active crater containing a 500-m-wide acid lake located ENE of Von Seebach crater. On Monday evening, the Rincón de la Vieja volcano had two eruptions within an hour, the first at 8:13 p.m., quickly followed by another at 8:20 p.m. A Plinian eruption producing the 0.25 km3 Río Blanca tephra about 3,500 years ago was the last major magmatic eruption. The twin cone of Santa María volcano, the highest peak of the complex, is located at the eastern end of a smaller, 5-km-wide caldera and has a 500-m-wide crater. Activity has migrated to the SE, where the youngest-looking craters are located. Sometimes known as the "Colossus of Guanacaste," it has an estimated volume of 130 km3 and contains at least nine major eruptive centers. The volcano consists of an elongated, arcuate NW-SE-trending ridge constructed within the 15-km-wide early Pleistocene Guachipelín caldera, whose rim is exposed on the south side. Rincón de la Vieja, the largest volcano in NW Costa Rica, is a remote volcanic complex in the Guanacaste Range. Later that day, in the early evening, an hour-long sequence of eruptions produced gas-and-steam plumes and ejected tephra no higher than the crater rim (except for an event at 1738). An event at 0325 on 25 May was heard by residents to the N but was no visually confirmed due to darkness. Plumes from eruptive events at 1624 on 22 May and 0608 on 24 May rose 1 km above the rim. ![]() A small ash eruption at 0537 on 21 May produced a plume that rose 1 km above the crater rim and contained less water vapor than plumes from eruptive events in the past weeks. Some of the events were not visually confirmed by webcams because of weather conditions or darkness. OVSICORI-UNA reported that periodic phreatic explosions at Rincón de la Vieja continued to be recorded by the seismic network and webcams during 20-26 May most plumes rose no higher than 500 m above the crater rim. 1916 m All times are local (unless otherwise noted) The 1657-m-high andesitic volcano towers above the eastern shores of Lake Arenal, which has been enlarged by a hydroelectric project. Rincon de la Vieja Costa Rica 10.83°N, 85.324°W summit elev. Conical Volcan Arenal is the youngest stratovolcano in Costa Rica and one of its most active. ![]()
